Euro Banknote Design Proposals Unveiled
On July 23, 2026, the European Central Bank (ECB) announced ten finalists for the third series of euro banknote designs.
One might wonder why the ECB is launching a third physical series while simultaneously preparing for the digital euro. The digital euro is not intended to replace physical cash-at least not anytime soon. Instead, it aims to provide a robust, public digital payment alternative independent of commercial banks. This is particularly relevant for individuals without standard bank accounts, such as younger demographics who still require access to digital wallet transactions.
Initial rollout testing for the digital euro is slated for 2029. Similarly, even if the ECB selects the final physical banknote design by late 2026, several years will pass before the actual release, which will then be phased in over a two-to-three-year period.
European Identity and Soft Power
Banknote design serves as a subtle yet powerful tool for unity and cultural representation within the European Union. Centered around two primary themes-"European Culture" and "Rivers & Birds"-the designs offer a modern narrative for the bloc. The "Rivers & Birds" theme is widely considered the leading contender, as natural landscapes inherently bypass geopolitical and border disputes that can occasionally complicate cultural historical figures.
